The Story Of Perfect Day

Perfect Day began it’s life on a small Yamaha keyboard in 2004. Originally written by Ged McKenna for a musical play called Life Changes it was designed to tell the story of a character who was finding life difficult but still had ambitions to turn their life around.

The song took a prominent part in the musical play ‘Life Changes’. Paul Codman, who recently narrated Steve Jones’s poems about his son Rhys, said at the time of the play ‘If someone sits in the theatre without tears in their eyes after hearing Perfect Day there is something wrong with them’.

The stage production version of Perfect Day was the soloist singer Beverley Keenan, singing along to a haunting piano played by Andrew Stephenson a LIPA Graduate. The tune for the song remains pretty much the same although the structure is slightly different as are the lyrics.

The Lyrics

I’m all alone
Watching the clock move on
Where is it going to
Will it show me the way I’m stepping out,
Onto a crowded street,
Where is it leading to,
Can it show me the way

Chorus
Can I see the colours of the flowers should they bloom this year,
Feel the beat of my heart will it love again,
Can I see the World through the trees that are crowding me
Show me the way
To a Perfect Day
To a Perfect Day
To a Perfect Day
I had a dream,
The lonely days had gone
Why did it go away
Can it show me the way

I sit alone
Wanting good times to come
Why are they never here
Can they show the way

Chorus.

Ged says, ‘When we heard the extremely sad news about Rhys and heard that the campaign for the centre had been launched we wanted to do what we could to help. I met up with Bev and we agreed that recording the song would be a good way to achieve this. What amazed me from that moment on was the amount of generosity and support from a wide range of people to make this happen .
